Insight To His Sight: Recognizing God’s Purpose For You
Chapter: The Deep Underlying Reality (Pages 141-143)
Knowing that our struggle really is against principalities and powers is where we begin to be seers of the deep underlying reality—the reality that is a battle between the forces of God and those of Satan. I know how it feels to just want to see God prove himself trustworthy and set right all that is wrong. If we only knew God’s passion for justice and truth in this world. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
When we take a closer look at the prophets, we see that they emphasized a flow in the reverse direction from later to now. They defined human longing— every utopian vision traces back to their words—and they portrayed a glorious future in order to affect now behavior.
They were given a vision of the world as God wants it for people to hold onto even in a time of turmoil and despair. The prophets call us beyond the fears of grim reality of present history into a view of all eternity to a time when God’s reign will fill the earth with light and truth. That is what Habakkuk meant by his phrase, “The just shall live by faith.” We hold onto belief in God’s goodness even in a world that is falling apart right before our eyes.
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. “Vanity of vanities,” says
the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” What advantage does man have in all his work which he does under the sun? A generation goes and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. Also, the sun rises and the sun sets; And hastening to its place it rises there again. That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So, there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, “See this, it is new?” Already it has existed for ages which were before us. There is no remembrance of earlier things; And also of the later things which will occur, there will be for them no remembrance among those who will come later still.”
“And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is a grievous task which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with. I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind. What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted. I said to myself, “Behold, I have magnified and increased wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge. And I set my mind to know wisdom and know madness and folly; I realized that this also is striving after wind. Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.”
“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying. “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star.” And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost. I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book :if anyone adds to them, God shall add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.”
